Side Effects Of Being A Cheerleader

By  |  0 Comments

Cheerleading has a lot of glitz and glamour including the amazing routines that are shown out on the floor, but there is way more to cheerleading beyond what people see us perform on the blue mat.

The work put into learning every skill and the amount of time and dedication that it takes effects so much of a cheerleaders life.  From injuries, to your social life, you don’t have much time outside of practice and competitions.  You have all your friends outside of cheer, but it’s hard to find time to hang out with them or do anything extra around cheerleading.  Eventually, your friends stop asking you to do activities and stop inviting you to events. You are not able to socialize outside of school and your constantly on the go.  You may even have to miss Friday night football games, school dances or even your best friend’s birthday party.  Yes, you always have your cheer friends, but not being able to do a lot outside of cheer does make you miss that social part of your life.

However, in the end there is a rewarding feeling.  You know that you are part of something bigger than yourself.  You learn what it is to be dedicated and committed to a team and you sacrifice a lot for your teammates because the blue mat is where you belong.  You have a passion and a desire to be the best cheerleader you can possibly be and you get to travel, meet new friends and show off everything you have dedicated all your time to.

Along with many other cheerleaders, I have a desire for greatness for my gym, my teammates and coaches which makes the sacrifice of certain parts of my life worth it. In the end, the desire, dedication and commitment that goes into being the best cheerleader and teammate possible reminds us why we do what we do. The sacrifices we make for  that 2 minutes and 30 seconds on the floor for the sport we give so much to is truly worth it.
