Major Competition Stress

By  |  0 Comments

Competition season is an exciting time of year. However it can be extremely nerve wracking, especially when you are going to a big competition! As an all-star cheerleader and competitive dancer, I am familiar with the stress that can come before hitting the competition floor!

My advice to you is that the harder you practice for a competition the better you will feel. Remember, the trophies are won in practice, you just pick them up at the competition. Work hard at practice, and be confident that it will pay off. I know that the days/weeks leading up to the big competition day can be very stressful and tiring, it has definitely gotten to me before. So you need to make sure to take care of your body and get lots of rest!

Some ways I keep my nerves under control during competition are yoga, breathing, and visualizing myself nailing the routine. Doing yoga the night before a competition not only will help you calm your mind, but will loosen up your muscles so you are not tense on competition day.

The time that the nerves get to me the most are definitely right before going on the floor. Remember to stay calm during warm ups, and remind yourself that you’ve done it before so all you need to do it remember your training. Take deep breathes and stay positive!

The best way to calm down, is to visualize. Think through your routine in your head (listen to your music if it helps) and visualize yourself hitting the routine perfectly. This helps so much and helps me feel more confident.

Remember that in the end you will look back and remember the awesome memories, not the place you came in. Do your best and have fun. You’ve got this!
