My Busy Schedule During Cheer Competition Season

Travel competitions and school are two words that don’t belong in the same sentence. Yet, as a student athlete this is a concern for virtually everyone on an All-Star team. As an athlete I spend over 25 hours a week in the gym preparing for competitions for the two teams I compete with. I pour my blood, sweat and tears into being the best I can be and long for my time on the mat to shine.

However, I would be remiss to say that my school work doesn’t demand the same amount of attention. As a high school freshman enrolled in honors classes, course expectations are intense. Therefore in order to maintain my 4.0 grade point average, I must strategically plan my time. My high school has a very strict attendance policy, so often I force myself to head into school when I am a bit under the weather, in order to save my days off for competition season. But when out, I am in in close contact with my teachers, who are all super supportive of my commitment as both student and athlete. They work closely with me providing extra sessions, to ensure that I stay on top of all my assignments.

This year I am fortunate that our scheduled travel competitions coincide with school long weekends (i.e. January we will be going to Spirit of Hope in North Carolina on Martin Luther King weekend – so I am only missing one day of school), which is a huge relief to someone like me who tends to worry about juggling it all. I guess bottom line to for me is that I want to be the best I can both school and cheer and I am willing to do whatever it takes for that to happen!
