Are You a Humble Winner?

In this article I am writing about why it is important to stay humble after a win, and to be honest I’ve struggled with it! Most of my articles are instructional and are easy because I can show what I’ve done to help me get to where I am, but those are all actions!

Being humble is an action too, but it’s inside me and has been my whole life, and I think I’ve had a hard time with this because when emotions and self control are pretty natural, it’s hard to explain something has been a part of your life from the beginning that you haven’t really had to physically work hard for. I’ve been taught since I was small to respect others feelings and be kind. I’ve been taught to work hard and good things will come to me, and I always make an effort to give back to the ones who aren’t having the best day.

Winning a competition is a great feeling, it’s the reward for what you’ve worked so hard for in the gym every day. The thing you have to remember when you’ve won that competition is there are plenty of other kids that work really hard too, but things just didn’t go their way that day. They can get it together and come back and beat you the very next day if it’s a longer competition, and you want them to have the same respect for your effort as you did theirs.

We have to remember winning isn’t the only reason we compete. If I knew we wouldn’t win another competition for the rest of the year, would I quit? No way!!! I’ve lost way more competitions than I’ve won, that isn’t what it’s about. It’s about working as hard as you can for yourself and your team, and my team is why I work so hard in cheer. This isn’t an individual sport, you are where you are because of your team, you need them, and it is important to know that.

This weekend we had a competition, I’m on three teams and one of which we won, another we finished second, and the last we finished third. Each teammate got the same hug and the same respect from me regardless of the finish. We are all in it together, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
