5 Things to Know Before Tryouts

Always remember- Confidence is key!
Be the cheerleader judges want to see on the field. Keep your head up, make solid eye-contact, and most importantly- smile!

The five things you should know before cheer tryouts:

1. What to Wear:

The most important thing to keep in mind when choosing an outfit is to be comfortable. For tryouts, you’ll want to wear a t-shirt and shorts in your school colors. If you’re trying out for your high school cheer team, wear one of your schools t-shirts or a color-coordinating Bow in your braid to show your school spirit. Make sure your apparel is clean and fits well. A big smile and enthusiasm are always in style.

2. Find a Mentor:

Set yourself up for success. The best way to learn is to ask questions! Talk to someone that has already made the team and ask lots of questions. Learn what you might expect on the big day so that you can prepare- both mentally and physically. Veteran members can be your guide and give you a better sense for what the coach and judges typically look for at cheer tryouts.

3. Attitude is Everything

Focus, relax and take your time. Remember that coaches often keep an eye out for attitude — especially at cheer tryout clinics. Smile, encourage others, and be grateful. You’ll stand out as someone who works well with others. Before tryouts, remember to relax. If you do get nervous, listen to some music to energize yourself while you get ready. Stay focused on your routine. Just take it nice and slow- and remember, you got this!

4. Practice, Practice, Practice:

Spend time at the gym working with your cheer coaches. Work on jumps, motions, tumbling and spiriting. One thing to keep in mind is that learning choreography is a skill. If you’ve never spent time learning routines- it’s definitely something you should practice. Often during tryout clinics you are required to learn several routines in one week, which can feel overwhelming. Practice learning routines before tryouts and your brain will be trained to take in new choreography more easily.

5. Healthy Living:

Take good care of yourself by eating right. Make sure to eat lots of fresh veggies and fruit and drink plenty of water. Make sure to balance hard work with a good night sleep. Rest up for your big day!
