Cheer Hairdos (And Don’ts)

“Consider the fact that maybe, just maybe, beauty and worth aren’t found in a makeup bottle, or a salon-fresh hairstyle, or a fabulous outfit. Maybe our sparkle comes from somewhere deeper inside, somewhere so pure, authentic and REAL it doesn’t need gloss or polish or glitter to shine.”
-Mandy Hale

There’s a reason “Look like a beauty, train like a beast” is one of the most commonly seen phrases on cheerleading bags, bows, shirts.. You name it! It’s because we are some of the most fabulous looking athletes out there (who could deny it?). We sweat, we ache, we push and get better every day… all while looking absolutely FABULOUS. While “appearance” may not be on the score sheet, overall performance is, and just having sharp, toned skills isn’t going to cut it.

Having fabulous and secure hairstyles is going to play into having sharp choreography a lot. And let’s be real, how much are you really practicing if you’re constantly fixing your hair to keep it out of your face? Here’s a hint, it’s not very much. To avoid onstage mishaps and in practice difficulties, its best to have a tried and true hairstyle you know won’t fall flat. Make sure you communicate with your coaches and teammates to see what hairstyles best suit your competition needs!

While my gym doesn’t have a required hairstyle for practices (it must be out of your face), it does for competition. On competition days we are required to have sleek, non-frizzy, no flyaway, high pony-tails. With having obnoxiously curly hair, this is no easy task. I straighten my hair for every competition and rely on oils and a *ton* of hairspray to keep my hair looking performance ready. For practices, I tend to take a more ‘lax approach. Braids are my best friend for a secure, reliable practice style. French, fish, pigtail, you name it! Though on a rushed oh-my-gosh-I’m-late day, a classic half up/half down style with some hairspray does the trick!
