Camp season is an exciting time for cheerleaders! It is a time when you get to learn new skills, create lifelong bonds with your teammates, and meet cheerleaders from different teams! There are many ways to prepare for cheer camp, but some of the most valuable tips you can get are those that allow you to have a safe and enjoyable cheer camp experience. We have come up with 5 of the most importants ways to ensure your safety at cheer camp.

1. Drink plenty of water

You will be participating in hours and hours of physical activity at cheer camp, so it is extremely important to stay hydrated. Because you will be doing things that you enjoy, it will be easy to forget to take the time to drink the proper amount of water. Keeping your body hydrated prevents cramping and will allow you to keep up your energy levels throughout the day, so making sure you remember to drink plenty of water is a must.

2. Stretch regularly

Keeping your muscles warm and relaxed is necessary in order to avoid injuries. When you are learning new skills, you are going to want to test your limits, and having already stretched will make the risk of injuring yourself much smaller. Dedicating 5-10 minutes to stretch between activities will keep your body prepared for whatever you have planned.

3. Wear sunscreen

If your camp is held outdoors it is crucial that you wear sunscreen! Because you will most likely be sweating, you must also remember to keep reapplying it every few hours, or as often as the sunscreen you are using instructs you to. Not only are sunburns dangerous for your health, they can also cause for a very painful experience for the rest of cheer camp. Having to tumble, stunt, or even dance with a sunburn can be incredibly painful, so just keep applying that sunscreen.

4. Focus

There is a good chance that some parts of cheer camp will feel overwhelming. There are going to be a lot of things going on at once, and a lot of new and exciting activities. However, when it is time to learn, it is important to focus solely on the task at hand. If you are learning a new stunt or tumbling pass it is essential that you listen very carefully to your instructor’s directions. Making sure that you are cautious and aware when you are learning new skills is very important at cheer camp.

5. Use the buddy system

And although you should feel comfortable and safe at cheer camp, it is a good idea to use the buddy system when going to and from events. This is not only a great way to ensure your own safety, but also a way to make new friends! Cheerleading camp is all about creating new experiences for your self, so using the buddy system as an “excuse” to meet someone new is a great way to do so.

Now that you have these tips, you are ready to attend your cheer camp! Be sure to share these tips with your teammates to ensure that they have a great cheer camp experience too!
